The purpose of this article is to determine how selected province have used the funds coming from the Rural Development Programme 2007–2013. During the study it was taken into consideration the issue of optimizing the use of land through the afforestation. The study was conducted in an area of two provinces the Warmia-Mazury and Podlasie, which represent the area of “Polish Green Lungs” with the respect to their unique natural values. Compiled data are presented in the form of maps which show absorption of the space in relation to the Programme and the occurrence of the land concerned. The next stage of research was conducted on the territory of the municipality Pisz located in the province of Warmia-Mazury. As a result the article defines how large is the use of the funds and how visible are the effects of afforestation investments, by optimizing land use in the studied areas.
