Prepositional phrases as fashionable exponents of relativization
Abstract
The article uses tools and methods of structuralist semantics. It discusses applications of prepositional phrases such as: na gruncie [on the ground of], w obszarze [in the area of], na odcinku [on the stretch of], w optyce [in the optics of], w trybie [in the mode of], or w temacie [in the topic of]. They are fashionable, yet often questionable in terms of their correctness. In the corpora of contemporary Polish there are numerous acceptable and unacceptable confirmations of these phrases. The author attempts to determine why they are so eagerly used, what place they occupy in language, and what function they fulfil in the information structure of utterances. Starting from detailed empirical observations based on examples in the National Corpus of the Polish Language and internet resources, she proceeds to propose theoretical generalizations related primarily
to the issue of the location of the analysed prepositional phrases within the theme-rheme
structure of utterances. These phrases serve to relativize, or more precisely, to indicate
in what aspect the subject of a given sentence is characterized. Therefore, they belong to
the category of expressions obligatory in language. The ones that are lexicalized should
be given their rightful place in Polish dictionaries.
