Where did you come from, dude? Reasons and functions of gamers’ immersive utterances – a study based on Let’s Plays and YouTube stream recordings
Abstract
While playing video games, players often speak to various objects within the game’s world, which is a sign of their immersion in the game. The present article aims to show: 1) who or what players directly address in the game; 2) what linguistic resources they use; 3) what typical stimuli trigger the emergence of immersive utterances; 4) what typical speech acts, utterance functions, and speaker’s intentions appear in such utterances. The research material for the study consisted of selected Polish-language Let’s Plays and recordings of video game streams available on YouTube. The undertaken research
shows that players most often address non-player characters and opponents directly
using neutral or negatively evaluative names. These utterances are formed in response
to several typical stimuli: 1) what occurs in the game world; 2) events or someone’s
actions (verbal or nonverbal) in the game world; 3) ongoing actions by the player/avatar
or their completion. Each of these categories includes different typical speech acts, such
as greetings upon noticing something, insults after an opponent’s attack, or apologies
after defeating an enemy.
