Chorwacja zdemolowała Polaków. Nasi zdewastowani. On new expressive meanings of the verbs (z)dewastować and (z)demolować in Polish
Abstract
The aim of the article is to present the semantics and functions of the verbs: (z)dewastować
[to devastate] and (z)demolować [to demolish], which in contemporary Polish sports
discourse are acquiring non-traditional, emotionally charged meanings. The analytical
material for the study consists of texts published on internet portals. The perfective and
imperfective verbs in question are used in new meanings: “to defeat an opponent, gaining
a clear advantage over them” (referring to the metaphorical meanings of these verbs,
related to acting to someone’s detriment, which have been in use in Polish for a long
time). Reporting sports results using the verbs demolować, zdemolować and dewastować,
zdewastować presupposes the undeniable superiority of the winning player or team and a
significant difference in level between them and their opponents. As neosemantic units,
they construct a syntactic pattern alien to the basic meanings of these verbs – with a
complement expressed by a personal noun (dewastować/demolować + someone). The shift
in the meaning of these verbs is mainly influenced by the English language. The verbs
demolować, zdemolować and dewastować, zdewastować in their new meanings appear
mainly in sports journalists’ reports as well as in comments by athletes and coaches and in
statements by fans. As text components, they enhance the expressiveness of the statement,
introduce evaluation, and intensify the effect of the message. The new semantization of
these verbs follows widespread tendencies towards bluntness and brutalization of language
which are visible in contemporary media.
