Multi-motivation and the language user in standard Polish word formation
Abstract
The article focuses on the issue of motivation, which is fundamental to word formation. More specifically, the author describes the phenomenon of multi-motivation and the place of linguistic intuition of the so-called language user in word formation research and description. The first part of the article presents theoretical assumptions and conclusions regarding multi-motivation adopted in various models of general Polish word formation, especially binary and nest descriptive word formation. It also discusses
common knowledge (user’s intuition) as understood in various research approaches,
and the possibility of employing such knowledge in research. The second part provides
results of a word-formation survey aimed at examining the perception of motivational
relationships as seen by so-called users of Polish. Only answers to questions 1–8 of the
survey were analysed, while questions 9–10 are the subject of a separate study: celnik,
spokój – spokojny, stoczniowiec, hak – haczyk, optymizm – optymista, cham – chamstwo,
metalowiec. On this basis, several theoretical and methodological research conclusions
were formulated: users’ interpretations often, but not always and not fully, correspond to
scientific ones. They lean towards formal proximity (and motivation). Yet, this is specific
proximity, understood differently than the one which is commonly accepted in word
formation, which leads to differences in determining motivation. Users’ interpretations
show a certain tendency towards multi-motivation. Moreover, users’ definitions can be
used to verify the “naturalness” of paraphrases.
