Abstract

This article analyses how Witold Gombrowicz and Sławomir Mrożek referred to the works of
Marcel Proust in their diaries, considering him both as an inspiration and a“literary adversary”.
Gombrowicz viewed Proust as an author whose method of reinterpretation of the past through
memory conflicted with his own strategy of self-creation, whereas Mrożek regarded Proust as
aguide who helped him understand his own life. In the context of both diaries, Proust functions as
acatalyst for literary self-analysis, serving as areference point for the search for identity and creative definition.
