Abstract

Toruń (Thorn) was one of the great Prussian cities and a prominent business and trading hub in Prussia. The Toruń castle played an important role in the Teutonic Order’s contacts with Prussian, including Hanseatic, cities and the Prussian authori-ties. This article discusses the food reserves, kitchen utensils and tableware kept by the Teutonic knights in the pantries and utility rooms of the Toruń castle. The Great Polish-Lithuanian-Teutonic War was a very important period in the castle’s history when the largest food reserves had been amassed in the royal pantries. In the analy-sed period, the accumulation of food reserves was common practice in preparation for war. Such measures were also infuenced by the political situation of the time. Teutonic offcers who were responsible for the supervision of food reserves in the castle are listed and discussed in the article.
