Abstract

The article analyzes the role of the Józef Piłsudski Pediatric Therapeutic Institute in Istebna in the fight against tuberculosis between 1928, when the initial plan to build the institute was approved, and the outbreak of World War II in 1939. The prevalence and mortality rate of tuberculosis was high in the Second Polish Republic. Tuberculosis was a social disease that could affect everyone. The prevention and treatment of tuberculosis was an important priority for the Polish authorities. The government financed the construction of sanatoria and medical institutions dedicated to the treatment of the disease. The first patients were admitted to the Józef Piłsudski Pediatric Therapeutic Institute in Istebna in 1937. The institute specialized in the treatment of children and adolescents, and it was one of the most advanced centers of the type in Poland. The young patients were subjected to various treatments, and they attended a school on the institute’s premises. The institute occupied a modern and functional building, and it was an important center for the treatment of tuberculosis in the Second Polish Republic
