The article analyzes the military operations of the 1st Infantry Division (Legion) in the September 1939 campaign based on the 1946 report of Lieutenant-Colonel Henryk Pohoski. During the 1939 campaign, Pohoski was a captain and an operational officer in the division’s general staff. The report begins with the declaration of general mobilization on 24 August 1939. It describes the mobilization effort and the transportation of the division’s troops to Małkinia, Ostrów Mazowiecka and Długosiodło. The report gives a detailed account of the battles fought by the division to prevent the enemy from crossing the Narew River near Pułtusk and the Bug River near Wyszków. The division retreated from Wyszków and moved south-east on the orders of the General Commander. During the retreat, the 6th regiment of the Legions Infantry fought a victorious battle in Kałuszyn. After suffering heavy losses in the area of Seroczyn, Wodynie, Wola Wodyńska and Domanice, the division was crushed, and it ceased to exist as a fully functional unit of the Polish Armed Forces. The last part of the report focuses on the efforts to reinstate the division by integrating soldiers from the defeated 3rd Infantry Division (Legion) and the second battle of Tomaszów Lubelski where the division was ultimately annihilated. The report ends with a brief description of the second battle of Tomaszów Lubelski during which the author was captured by the enemy.
