Abstract

This article discusses the role played by Michał Fryderyk Czartoryski, the Lithuanian Vice-Chancellor and one of the political leaders of the “Familia” party, in the political life of Minsk and the Minsk Province during his term in office (1724–1752). The city and the province were not considered political heavyweights in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and were rarely mentioned in the Vice-Chancellor’s correspondence, but Czartoryski paid close attention to the election of tribunal deputies from Minsk, distributive politics, and territorial offices in the Minsk Province. As a seasoned politician, Czartoryski mastered the art of forming short-term alliances with political opponents, including the Radziwiłłs, and using other social groups, such as the Jews, to push through his political plans, even if only on the local scale.
