Abstract

There is a general scarcity of Polish historical research into ancestral commanderies. Ancestral commanderies were part of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. They were founded on the estates donated by wealthy nobility or in manors or villages contributed by less affluent members of the Order. The ancestral commandery of the Kossakowski family was created on 30 June 1800 on the estates of Antokol, Antokolek and Szymaniszki. Its founder and first commander was Józef Dominik Kossakowski, the former Master of the Hunt of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The founding document has been deposited in the Russian State Economic Archive: fond 496, inventory number 3, archiving date 1979. The document consists of 6 pages and is written in Russian. The archive entry includes a 7-page French translation.
