Abstract

In the last months of World War II, German troops and civilians were evacuated from the cut-off region of East Prussia across the frozen Vistula Lagoon. The evacuees were transported across ice-bound waters for many weeks. The routes were targeted by Soviet attack aircraft that did not distinguish between military and civilian transports. This article analyzes the tragic events of February and March 1945 based on the written accounts of German civilians as well as the military reports of Red Army air force units that participated in these attacks. The events are described in detail, and the operations of Red Army regiments and the achievements of individual pilots are documented based on military records. The article contains unique aerial reconnaissance photographs showing columns of civilian horse-drawn wagons on ice.
