Abstract

A failed attempt to establish a trade union of the Citizens’ Militia took place in late May and early June of 1981. Years later, the leaders of this initiative delivered conflicting reports and assessments of these events, which triggered an outpouring of personal animosities. The discrepancies in the testimonies given by the members of a formerly tightly knit community, who had been quite unanimous in their opinions and attitudes in the past, can be attributed to various and complex phenomena, ranging from unfulfilled personal ambitions to different systems of values. These boundary conditions allow for a plethora of premises, and they preclude an objective diagnosis. Therefore, this article does not attempt to explain the roots of these animosities on psychological grounds, but it focuses on factual allegations. This research approach was deployed to discuss the origins and the attempts to implement the initiative.
