This article analyzes a military report on the operations of 1st Legions Infantry Division during the 1939 campaign, drafted in 1946 by Lieutenant Colonel Henryk Pohoski, who served as the operations officer in the Division’s headquarters in the rank of Captain during the campaign. The report begins with the announcement of military mobilization on 24 August 1939. The mobilization operations, the transfer of the division to the region of Małkinia and Ostrów Mazowiecka, and the military buildup in the region of Długosiodło are described. In most part, the report focuses on military operations and defensive action on the Narew River near Pułtusk and the Bug River near Wyszków. Acting on the orders of the Commander-in-Chief, the division withdrew and headed southeast. During the retreat, the 6th Infantry Regiment fought a victorious battle over Kałuszyn. Following heavy fighting in the area of Seroczyn, Wodynie, Wola Wodyńska and Domanice, the division was decimated and ceased to exist as a fully-fledged unit of the Polish Army. The last part of the report describes the efforts to reorganize the division by incorporating soldiers from the scattered 3rd Legions Infantry Division. The report ends with an account of the Second Battle of Tomaszów Lubelski during which the unit was annihilated. Henryk Pohoski was captured by the Germans after the battle.
