Abstract

'The Chronicle' by Stefan Ranatowicz, Canon Regular of the Lateran, gives an account of the 17th history of the Canons Regular of the Lateran of the Corpus Christi congregation in Kazimierz, Cracow. The Chronicle documents the lives of the monastery’s successive provosts and the order’s history. It features numerous annotations on important historical, cultural and social events, mainly in the region of Małopolska, as well as references to facts and developments of national importance. The Chronicle is a valuable historical source, in particular for scholars researching the 17th century. In his work, Ranatowicz relied on various source materials and made frequent references to Polish Medieval and post-Medieval chronicles. He was most appreciative of Jan Długosz’s history of Poland. Ranatowicz’s narrative is based on carefully selected materials and a critical analysis of historical sources, and it falls into the realm of modern historiography. The Chronicle is carefully structure and abounds in facts that were readily used in by historians in later years.
