The history of legal regulations connected with nature conservation in Poland started at the beginnings of our state system formation. Different social and scientific movements, as well as legal bases of nature preservation, date back to the first half of the 19th century. After independence had been regained, the Minister for Reigious Systems and Public Education was made responsible for nature conservation. The Provisional State Committee for Nature Conservation – a governing body – was in 1926 turned into the State Council for Nature Conservation was organized in 1928. Thanks to the efforts of nature conservation pioneers and activists, 3 national parks and 180 nature reserves were opened in Poland until the year 1939, and ca. 4500 objects were classified as nature monuments. Our country, through its representatives, has always taken an active part in international actions connected with nature conservation. Satisfactory results concerning the restitution of Białowieża bisons in their natural conditions received wide recognition in the world.
