Students and the Values They Follow in the Period of a Political Transformation (A Preliminary Analysies)

Wiktor Sawczuk

Abstract

The system transformation we experience at present includes political, social and economic spheres and has an influence on the changes in attitudes assumed by society. The changes are easy to observe in the circles of university students, and concern first of all the last year students, who face the problem of becoming self-dependent and finding a job. This is the period when individual hierarchies of primary and secondary values are created.

The studies were aimed at defining the preferences regarding allocentric and sociocentric values, expressed by the students of the Olsztyn University of Agriculture and Technology. The main research problem was connected with the question about mutual relationship between allocentric and sociocentric values, and factors that determine certain preferences. The studies were based on the method of a diagnostic poll, employing the technique of questionnaire examinations.

The research had a preliminary character and preceded the actual one. An analysis of the material collected enables to draw initial conclusions that the attitudes of the students subjected to tests towards allocentric and sociocentric values resemble ‘vibrating axiological structures’, i.e. are rather impermanent, unstable and ambiguous.
