Abstract

The discussion on man which commenced in the twentieth century can now be expressed by the question whether man has his own reality or he is rather a creation of historical forces. In the recent decades the latter approach has dominated and been especially supported by the arguments of cultural and social constructivists. Some philosophers, referring to this situation as worshiping history, have shown that not all the reality is a culturally constructed and historically changeable sense; moreover, the reality of human being also belongs to the sphere not governed by historical construction. J. Habermas has recently joined these philosophers, although in the past he was known as a radical supporter of constructivist-historicist approach. He has expressed the need to refer in the dis- course concerning man to the metaphysical and religious language which indicates in the man and in the world something a-historical, which in turn conditions human existence in the historical world. The author of this article proposes referring to the great mystical tradition and is of the opinion that it is the source of conviction that man needs to respect reality, including the hu- man reality. According to the author accepting this tradition is the basic condition of human autonomy as well as existing in history and controlling it.
