Abstract

The article reconstrucs the main elements of David Hume’s philosophy of politics regarding establishing the body politic. According to the Scottish philosopher the principal condition of abandoning the natural state of people is determining the laws of property. In concequence it leads to creating the positive laws and the rules of politic power. Hume points out the psychological circumstances of setting up body politic such as natural egoistic motivation and limited benevolence. The vision presented by Hume has its origins in his view on the relation between reason (with its instrumental role) and passions (motivating human behaviour) in human nature. In spite of his criticism toward political philosophy of Hobbes and of Locke, Hume’s philosophy is a natural continuation of the critical strain found in his predecessors.
