Abstract

One of the major goals of the research into the ecological awareness of the youth is to find out how big is their knowledge of the most important ecological issues and how varied and reliable are the sources of this knowledge. Ecological knowledge is occasionally identified with the intellectually-empirical parameter of ecological culture. It does not necessarily have to be seen in the ecological behaviour of the youth. Though, it is undoubtedly required in the process of changing the youth’s social attitude towards the natural environment. The youth constitutes over 1/3 of the worlds population. However their knowledge of the relations between man and natural environment is inaccurate and insufficient. This is why ecological education and the rational moulding of the environment are strongly connected. The lack of ecological knowledge makes it impossible to understand the youth’s attitude towards the natural environment. The process of ecological upbringing and teaching has to deal with the diagnosis of this field of ecological knowledge as well as ignorance, which have to be shaped according to the changes determined by the guidelines of eco-development.
