The article deals with the issue of political parties in Latvia that are being formed after regaining independence by this country in 1991. The main topic that is being discussed is the people’s attitude towards the multiparty system that has emerged in Latvia recently. The author of the article emphasizes the fact that the newly formed parties concentrate in urban rather than in the rural area, the reason of which is the, so called, „void” in the political environment. The main reason for this state of affairs are: the low level of national awareness and low participation of Latvian citizens in the democratic and cultural activities of the state. The author remarks that among Latvian citizens, political groups are less popular than religious organizations and sport associations. This situation is caused by the negative attitude Latvian citizens, and especially the elder representatives of the society, hold towards political parties and politics in general.
