Civic Attitude, Identyfication with the State and the Latvian History

Janis Kunis

Abstract

After Latvia had regained independence an new problem arrived: the need to grant citizenship and integrate people of different from Latvian nationality. The outcome of the scientific research conducted between the year 1997-98 has proved that this kind of problem is being solved gradually. Non - Latvian population, in spite of not having citizenship granted, is developing strong bounds with the Latvian state. Such traits can be also seen in the Latvian history, which proves that multicultural integration has always been present in the tradition of Latvian social life.
