“Libertarian”, “libertarianism”. The early history of the concepts in the United States

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to show the unknow in Poland, history of libertarianism in the Unites States. Through organizing ways how libertarianism is understood and described, it starts the discussions of the theses that recognize libertarianism as the pro-capitalist or pro-socialist doctrine, identifying it with anarchism. The presentation of the history of the use of the terms “libertarian”, “libertarianism”, since the second half of the 19 th century to the 40 s the 20 th century, primarily focused on the aspect of thought, but it also refers to the history of social movements. The article ends with an attempt to define libertarianism.
