Abstract

This article concerns the philosophy of religion by a Spanish thinker Miguel de Unamuno, with particular focus on theses presented in his two works: The Tragic Sense of Life in Men and in Peoples and Tratado del amor de Dios. The author remarks that Unamuno proposed there different ways to resolve the problem of spiritual confusion. In the first work, he considers a possibility of reaching God through knowledge, whilst in the latter (not published in his lifetime), finding traditional evidence of God's existence insufficient even in the light of reason, the thinker recognises love to be a more reliable medium leading to union with Him. The author compares the considered views with philosophical and religious ideas of the age, among others of A.J. Balfour, W. Dilthey, C.G.A. von Harnack, W. James, S. Kierkegaard, A. Sabatier, A. Schopenhauer, G. Simmel, and E. Troeltsch.
