Strangeness and Familiarity of the Space of Lower Silesia in Zyta Oryszyn’s Novel Saving Atlantis (2012)

Agnieszka Dylewska

Abstract

The main purpose of this article is to portray the complex mechanism of taming the strange
space of Lower Silesia in Zyta Oryszyn’s polyphonic novel Saving Atlantis. The central issue under
discussion is the analysis of the multifaceted categories of familiarity and strangeness in the literary
representation of space created by the author. Another important point considered is the answer
to the question whether, and to what extent, the acceptance of the new reality and identification with
the new homeland are possible. Finally, the process of searching or reconstructing one’s own identity
is illustrated as situated between a tragedy and a new beginning, between the Polish and the German
identities, between familiarity and strangeness.
