Abstract

Aim: The article aims to discuss the issue of beliefs about emotions, in the broader context of the process of emotional regulation and conceptualization in various approaches of cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Thesis: The thesis is that beliefs about emotions are a transdiagnostic construct, i.e., they occur beyond diagnostic boundaries, affect the perpetuation of symptoms of several classes of disorders and are measurable both in clinical and non-clinical populations.

Conclusion: Based on the results of research on the prevalence of these beliefs in various groups, their transdiagnostic nature has been proven. A definition of the phenomenon and potential sources of its formation in the framework of the cognitive concept and the learning theory are presented. The mediating factors in the relationship between beliefs about emotions and well-being are discussed, with particular emphasis on avoidance strategies. As a summary of these relationships, a general illustrative model is proposed. The second part of the article presents a wide range of therapeutic procedures, basically cognitive-behavioral therapies, as evidence-based approaches. The use of the methods described may allow, directly or indirectly through intermediary factors, to change the beliefs about emotions and reduce mental and physical suffering.
