Abstract

The reconstruction of Vilnius University posed a massive challenge not only for the Polish community in Vilnius, but also for the entire Polish State in the frst days of its independence. The frst academic year was inaugurated in 1919 in an atmosphe-re of confict over territorial control of the Vilnius Region, the Polish-Soviet War and war damage. In the academic year of 1919/1920, Vilnius University had six faculties and 547 students. The Faculty of Theology was the smallest academic unit with only 8 employees, but it was expanded considerably in successive years. The Faculty of Theology was of particular importance for the Stefan Batory University as a symbol of the historical continuity of academic pursuit in Vilnius since the 16th century.
