Abstract

The article has two aims. The first was to analyze the reaction of US President Lyndon B. Johnson’s administration to the Prague Spring events of 1968 in Czechoslovakia. The article describes Alexander Dubček’s attempts to liberalize Czechoslovakia’s social and economic policy, the mounting conflict with the Soviet authorities, the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the armies of Warsaw Pact countries in August 1968, and the return to the status quo ante. The author analyzes the internal and foreign policy of the US administration during a highly turbulent period in the international arena. The second aim of the article was to analyze the US government’s interest in the Prague Spring based on an analysis of the articles and statistical reports published by The New York Times where these events received the most extensive coverage in the USA.
