Abstract

Saint Anthony is one of the most popular saints of the Catholic Church. Despite the passage of time, his fame has not diminished, and successive generations continue to pray to St. Anthony to intercede on their behalf. The article expounds the cult of St. Anthony in Opole, and it begins by presenting general information about the Franciscan Order in Opole. The Holy Trinity Church features a chapel that was formerly dedicated to St. Anthony, a painting bearing the saint’s name in the title, several sculptures St. Anthony, and collection boxes known as the “Bread of St. Anthony” where members of the congregation can make charitable donations. The Prayer Book of the Province of the Ascension of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual in Poland evoke love and trust in the saint. The book provides numerous references to the saint, and portrays him as an advocate of human affairs
and the embodiment of the ideal Christian life. The similarity between the Holy Trinity Church in Opole and the Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua is intriguing. The Franciscan monastery in Opole is adjacent to the right side of the church, and the altar is located to the left of the entrance facing the city center. St. Anthony’s Basilica in Padua has the same layout.
