Abstract

This article reviews Polish historiography dedicated to the Union of Lublin which has always been an important part of Poland’s historical narrative. An analysis of historiographic sources leads to the conclusion that literature dedicated to the Union of Lublin is abundant, yet deficient. It is quite extensive in quantitative terms, but a closer inspection reveals that most publications are mere compilations of dry facts.
In the last two centuries, the interest in the Union of Lublin was driven mainly by the complex character of this momentous event. The existing literature on the subject reveals a clear correlation between historiographic content and historical awareness. For this reason, the paper examines the associations and images related to the Union of Lublin from the Romantic Era to the 1990s. Five historiographic periods were distinguished within this chronological framework (the period before the January Uprising of 1863, the period after the January Uprising of 1863, the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the Second Polish Republic, and the period after World War II). The article is an analytical study, and it examines a wide range of Polish historiographic sources from the first half of the 19th century to the end of the 20th century. The article analyzes the views and opinions that were most characteristic of each examined period.
