This article analyzes an excerpt from a large-scale study of secondary school students conducted in 2016–2017 in the Region of Warmia and Mazury. A total of 555 questionnaires were collected from all countries in the region. The aim of the questionnaire was to survey the students’ knowledge and perceptions of the elements and relics of the history and material cultural heritage of the State of the Teutonic Order in Prussia. Several categories of heritage objects were identified in the questionnaire, including castles, Gothic churches, town halls, fortified walls, town gates, towers, other architectural objects and the historical urban layout. The respondents’ knowledge about Teutonic monuments in their area of residence was assessed. For this purpose, the late Medieval monuments identified by the respondents were compared with the sites listed in the regional register of monuments. The most spectacular architectural relics were identified in each town. In the next stage of the survey, the respondents’ interpretation of historical objects of Teutonic heritage was analyzed. Their knowledge and familiarity with the elements of a typical Medieval castle and the layout of a Medieval town was evaluated with the use of diagrams, drawings, plans and a map. The respondents’ perceptions of the material heritage of the Teutonic Order were also analyzed. The results were presented in various combinations.
The monastic state, a unique phenomenon on the European continent, and the artefacts of Teutonic material heritage that have been preserved in the historical and cultural landscape of the Region of Warmia and Mazury offer a wealth of opportunities for instilling historical awareness in the region’s inhabitants. The conclusions stemming from the survey and the implications for broadening public awareness are presented in the last section of the article.
