Abstract

This article describes the circumstances that led to the failure of Augustus II’s military expeditionagainst Turkey in 1698. At the end of the campaign, an anti-Saxon tumult broke out in the CrownArmy’s camp near Berezhany. The riot, which almost resulted in an armed clash between the Crown andSaxon Armies, was initiated by Michał Potocki, the starost of Krasnostav and son of Field Crown HetmanSzczęsny Kazimierz Potocki. Augustus II was convinced that Potocki had offended the majesty, and thatthe incident marked the beginning of a rebellion against the King. As a result of the incident, not only theinitiator of the tumult – the starost of Krasnostav, but also other members of the Potocki family fell intoroyal disfavor. The second part of the article focuses on Primate Michał Radziejowski’s attitude towardsthe events described above. Radziejowski, who opposed the King, made repeated efforts to amicablyend the “Michał Potocki’s affair”.
