Abstract

The article describes the symbolism of the snake in culture and religious systems. I focus on the snake’s character of the goddess, who represented the sexual power of a woman. This force has an aspect both creative and destructive, the most important task is to recognize its own being – a snake nature, tame it and use it for creative activities. In this article I analyse two of Berent’s novels: Próchno and Ozimina. In the first text, the analysis focuses on the figure of Władysław Borowski, his father as well as: Franciszek Müller, Henryk Hertenstein and the painter Pawluk. The character of the singer Yvetta and her song about any revenge of the viper are also crucial. In Ozimina, the figure of Nina is analyzed, which turns out to have the features of the snake goddess from Egypt – Wadjet, as well as the famous diva, whose appearance, character traits and behavior lead to associations with a snake deity.
