The author of the article strongly objects to holding scientists responsible for the practical outcome of their research. According to the author’s views, the outcome of scientific thought is used by individuals characterized by uneven level of mental development and as a consequence scientific inventions are much too frequently used in a harmful way.
By stressing the genuine attitude of man towards science, which often leads scientists to performing a struggle with the forces of the Universe or culture, the author emphasizes the heroism and splendor of such effort.
The author postulates the independence of scientific research from moral judgement. According to the author any limitations in expressing one’s beliefs and in performing any empirical actions are typical for the totalitarian state, while democracy, widely accepted by the contemporary states, guarantees ethical and ideological pluralism. However there are cases in which egoism, which is bound to human nature, may prefer doubtful values and may hinder individualism and idealism.
The author strongly suggests that people functioning in highly materialistically – oriented societies need to be taught some effective ways of self fulfilment connected with the pattern of living up to the high ideas. Only the struggle to reach the absolute characterizes humanity since it broadens the mind and deepens the knowledge about the world and the man himself, and at the same time it reflects the splendor and sense of our existence.
