Abstract

Russian philosophy was born in the Xth century, once Russia became Orthodox. Not all historians, both Russian and Western, agree with this view. They are rather willing to mention XVIII/XIX century. They mostly refuse the philosophical character of these first reflections concerning God, the world, man and point out their theological origin. Meanwhile, the medieval Russia, just like the medieval Europe, was considering the philosophical problems in the light of theology. Only later those two philosophies went their separate ways. The Orthodox philosophy largely permeated the Russian culture and shaped its characteristics, with the belief for the co-existence of faith and reason. Many XIXth and XXth century Russian philosophers had returned to the medieval reflection of the Church Fathers and had made it the foundation of their views.
