Jean-Pierre Melville: The Forgotten Stylist of Gangster Films

Abstract

This article is devoted to the stylistics of detective films directed by Jean-Pierre Melville. The main point of the paper is an approximation of the most important and recognizable elements of his films, which stand out among other works of this genre. The analysis will concern the genres and trends of film used by the director, including gangster films, noir cinema and policier. The author will also analyse the subject matter discussed in his films, the construction of their characters, as well as the tricks used by Melville, which were intended to make his films exceptional. The article focuses on the creation of the myth of masculinity, the marginalization of femininity, as well as various technical and aesthetic solutions that may have contributed to the development of the artist’s style.
