Abstract

This study compares high-tech civilization, described in the novel by Dave Eggers The Circle, with communication practices arising during the COVID-19 pandemic. The method of non-invasive analysis of existing documents was used. It includes a study of the novel, which can lead the researcher to fundamental problems. The novel contains references to real events, processes and corporate practices. The author formulates pessimistic forecasts regarding the impact of technology on man and humanity. His predictions logically result from the analysis of the existing state of development. Eggers predicts the corporate media development model. Technology enslaves users,
formats minds, destroys human identities and ties and manages the world as an inhuman Global Brain. In reality, however, users and communities have been able to oppose  surveillance. By using the media for communication, remote work and learning, they demand that the servers be located in an area governed by their legislation. Applications are being built that do not transfer user data. A dystopian novel helps prevent emerging threats. Eggers combines pure and engaged art and, as a laureate of several dozen literary awards, he unites social and writing activity into one mission.
