Abstract

This paper has been written to answer the question about the universality of mindfulness, the possibility of departing from the philosophy and religion of the East and seeking new inspirations in Western thought. The fascination with the Orient
without deep understanding has led to the commodification of the concept. The research hypothesis assumes that mindfulness does not have to refer to religious practices. In search of new directions of mindfulness, the inspiration and work of Olafur Eliasson, a Danish artist of Icelandic descent, were analysed. In his projects, he combines a fascination with nature with the philosophy of somaesthetics. Research conclusions confirm the hypothesis and indicate new directions of Western visual culture.
