Mukbang and food challenge – about eating on YouTube

Abstract

This article explores the popularity of two online food trends: mukbang and food challenge. The text aims to present these practices and show the possible reasons for the huge interest in them. The author analyses the potential motives of the creators that may induce them to follow these trends but pays more attention to the viewers’ position, trying to find out what attracts them to view this type of content. The research included in the text includes case studies of popular mukbang and food challenge materials posted on YouTube and the relationship between films and the specificity of the platform and culture in which they operate.
