Abstract

This text is a presentation of the Beat Generation as a social and literary movement; an element of New York’s bohemian artistic communities of the 1940s and 1950s. The analysis of their points of view on different social spheres, expressed in their literature and lifestyle, is based on their works and theories in the field of urban sociology. The text aims at drawing a map of Manhattan of that period as the area of activity of the Beat authors. It is also meant to provide a description of Manhattan based on the similarities and differences between its elements representing the different aspects of life, fields of activity or objects of criticism of the Beat Generation.
