The Dark Side of the City: Łódź in Radio Documentary by Joanna Sikorzanka

Abstract

The text describes the radio documentary of Joanna Sikorzanka, a journalist of Polish Radio Łódź. In love with her hometown, Sikorzanka travels through the “dark” streets of the city with a microphone and tries to capture their climate using sounds. The aim of the author of this article is to discuss a series about the “dark” streets of Łódź – Tuwima Street, Włókiennicza Street, Rybna Street, Limanowskiego Street and Abramowskiego Street. The author presents the topic of the broadcasts while showing the poetics of the documentaries in the style of Sikorzanka. In the text, the radio technique typical for the reporter is discussed – the way she records sounds, talks with characters and composes the whole broadcast.
