DEFINING RURAL AREAS IN SELECTED EU COUNTRIES

Abstract

In the European Union, where predominantly rural areas and intermediate areas cover 90%, the development of these areas is treated as a priority. It concerns also countries that joined EU in the current century. Planning and introducing development policies require both the analysis of supported and transformed areas and gaining knowledge from other countries’ experience. However, direct comparison of activities and their effects meets methodological problem – rural areas are defined according to various guidelines. It caused the necessity of using unified EU statistics, which does not include the specifics of particular countries. The aim of the article was to indicate the differences in definitions of rural areas in the countries that joined EU after 2004 and to underline the need for new, more adequate universal definition.
