Abstract

This article discusses 13th and 14th century seals in the historical archives of the monastery of the Canons Regular of the Lateran in Cracow. The research conducted to date suggests that the archive contains more than one thousand imprints of various seals, including nearly three hundred imprints dating back to the pre-Tridentine period. However, this vast collection has never been investigated independently. This article focuses exclusively on 13th and 14th century seals, and it is the first one in a planned series of articles. The collection includes seals of secular and ecclesiastical issuers, including kings, princes, royal officials, landed nobility, municipalities, popes, bishops and their officials. The paper contributes valuable information not only for Polish sigillography, but also for the European experts in the field.
