According to Cohen and according to the lessons Cohen draws from Rawls, it is of paramount importance that people assign to principles of justice a central place in their collectivity and act accordingly. This way, human beings are able to express their nature as equal and rational persons who have a moral status. Therefore, Cohen argues in I f You’re an Egalitarian, How Comes You’re So Rich?, they should let their economic life be guided by the Rawlsian difference principle and it is only through a distortion in the Rawlsian use of the principle that it serves as a justification for deep-rooted inequalities of opportunities. An assessment of this criticism is in order, paying due attention to the meaning to be given to the constitution of society in the context of this debate.
