Abstract

The question concerning technology seems to be one of the most profound issuses in contemporary philosophy. The following article presents Herbert M arcuse’s approach to the connection between technology and Nazism. According to his thought, modern technology is not only an objective set of tools, instruments, and means of production, but also an expression of a specific form of rationality, which determines the social life as a whole. For Marcuse, technology itself is a neutral power which can promote totalitarianism as well as liberation. His analyses of the national socialist state reveal the connections between totalitarianism, capitalism, and technology; however, considering the emancipatory potential o f technology, Marcuse develops also ideas that can be used to transform a technocratic regime into a new social reality
