Abstract

The purpose of this article is to show that the new trend in eco-philosophy, which attempts to give moral considerability to artifacts, can find support in the philosophy of Martin Heidegger. The article focuses on the following ontological assumptions made by Heidegger: the rejection of the idea of “the ladder of being” (the rejection of the concept of a metaphysical hierarchy, as well as the extension of its range); the unity of physis and techne; and the strict connection between individuality and interdependence of beings. These assumptions lead Heidegger to creating the concept of the “proper use,” which can provide the basis for the ecological ethos embracing both natural beings and artifacts.
