Abstract

The relationship between freedom and safety has been undergoing changes throughout the ages. One always outranked the other, depending on which concept was viewed as more fundamental. In this case, the optics of the changing vision of reality turns out to be of upmost significance: it largely determines the manner in which both categories are viewed. The article pertains to the relationship between the ancient and modern understanding of safety and political freedom. It was written to outline the historical correlations between the concepts.
