The author analyses some of Henryk Elzenberg’s remarks concerning the meaning and function of music for man. Music has the ability to anticipate, provoke, transfer and redirect the emotional contents, but what role does it play in cognition and the processing of thoughts? The issue is discussed in the context of the relations between music and mysticism, life and amorality, with reference to Beethoven and Wagner, as well as some of Wittgenstein’s reflections on music.
