Witkacy versus Whitehaed – Two Concepts of Philosophy, Two Concepts of Time and Space

Krzysztof Kościuszko

Abstract

The paper is aimed at explaining the way which Witkacy understandood philosophy as contrary to the views of A.N. Whitehead – the author of Process and Reality. What is important, is the relation between metaphysics and science, namely the question if metaphysics  is supposed to generalize different science branches (Whitehead), or if it is to remain independent, trying to interpret the results of scientific research within the framework of some metaphysical rules that exist a priori (Witkacy).

Different understanding of exact sciences (especially the physical theory of relativism formulated by Einstein) and their role in creating metaphysical systems may be illustrated by the example  of two categories: time and space, and the way  they are used by both trinkers. Einstein rejected  the metaphysical theory of absolute space and absolute time. Therefore Whitehead – blindly following the rules of physics – also criticized these notions. Witkacy, however, separating physics from philosophy, did not disregard the notions in question . Instead, he tried to synthesize metaphysics and physics. What follows, within the framework of one system, he joined metaphysical categories of time and space to the relativite physical idea of multiple space-time systems.
