Abstract

In 2016, the Documentary Association of the Association of Polish Filmmakers organized in Warsaw a review “100/100. Epoka polskiego filmu dokumentalnego” [“100/100. An Epoch of Polish Documentary”]. As a result of the plebiscite, the best documentaries in the history of Polish film were selected. Both the results of the vote and the Internet publications which reviewed “100/100” deserve a comment. From many of the topics discussed at that time, the issue of escaping documentalists from national problems have been addressed in this paper. On the one hand, it is escaping into the world – making films abroad, showing what important events happen in other countries, so clear escapist trends, on the other – self-expression and escape into the privacy of one’s home and family life, which becomes subject to description in a documentary film.
